Coffee House Seminars

Over the next few years, we hope to initiate a tradition of Seminars operated in Santa Fe's Coffee Houses and other public meeting places.   These meetings are  modeled on Graduate Seminars:  they are led by people with advanced degrees and attended by people with undergraduate degrees and some advanced training  in relevant fields.   Last semester, we taught a seminar in Emergence, which is, essentially, the study of how one gets wholes from parts.   We ranged over readings in philosophy, computation, mathmematics, psychology, and biological development.   We started out meeting in the garden at Down Town Subscription, and moved to the Pick Room at the Library, when the weather got too cold.

This semester, we are doing a Seminar on Mathematical Thinking, which will tease out mathematical creativity through a study of some important advances in the history of mathematics.

We are hoping very soon to initiate equivalent Coffee House Seminars in the social sciences and the humanities.  If have an idea for such a seminar we hope you will get in touch with cusf@earthlink.net
